The Polish president appeared to extend an olive branch to Ukraine after weeks of tests between Warsaw and Kiev, Sky News reports.
A bitter public spat over grain deals, aid packages and refugees eventually led to Poland declaring it would stop supplying arms to Ukraine, leaving Kiev scrambling to repair relations.
Now, President Andrzej Duda has acknowledged that President Zelenski’s inflammatory comments at the UN General Assembly may have been caused by stress and discussed the possibility of resuming arms deliveries to Kiev.
“Let’s not forget that Zelensky is under enormous pressure,” he told Polish newspaper Super Express in a wide-ranging interview.
“He is sending people to the front, often to their deaths.”
Discussing defence spending, he said the new equipment “must serve to strengthen the Polish army” before being sent to Ukraine.
“We don’t spend billions to suddenly give them away,” he said.
“But that doesn’t mean that we won’t hand over weapons to Ukraine at all.”
He then outlined under what circumstances the deliveries might resume.
“When old equipment is replaced by modern equipment, I don’t see a problem in sending that [old equipment] to the Ukrainians,” he said, in what will be a boost for Kyiv.
“We have to control our emotions, so that we remember who will benefit the most if the roads of Poland and Ukraine part. The consequences could be tragic.”
