Friday’s pro-Călin Georgescu rally at Romania’s Constitutional Court (CCR) quickly went viral on TikTok, shows a G4Media analysis made in the first hours after the protest started.

Hundreds of live streams from and about the event were running on TikTok shortly after 10:00, when the rally was announced. Each live stream analyzed by G4Media had at least 1,000 followers, but there were many such live streams of the rally gathering thousands or tens of thousands of followers.

Some of these live streams reached as many as 3 million likes, and the live by cryptocurrency businessman Călin Donca, one of the organizers, exceeded 1 million likes. See who Călin Donca is here. Donca created a new TikTok account to be able to broadcast live from the protest in front of the CCR because his other three accounts have either been suspended or restricted, he claims:

BogPR and Makaveli, two of the best-known „influencers” who support Călin Georgescu, did not go live from or about the protest. We remind you that BogPR is being investigated by prosecutors for financing the campaign of the pro-Russian candidate, and Makaveli became the „advisor” of Diana Șoșoaca, head of the extremist party SOS Romania.

In all the viral live streams analyzed by G4Media, donations of „roses” (a small, symbolic amount of money) are pouring in: thousands of people are sending money to the users who are live-streaming Georgescu’s protest. The amounts are small, infinitesimal, one rose represents 10 bani, but added together, from thousands of users, they can add up to a significant sum. What’s more, no user sends a single rose, but several at once, several times (e.g. 10 roses = 1 leu).

However, in such accounts, donations are more likely to express solidarity and the impact that an event or a person has on the community it influences.

The messages that users are rolling out on TikTok in relation to the protest are of hatred towards the political class, in particular the PSD and Klaus Iohannis, and of mobilization for a protest that will take place on Sunday at 2pm: „We will be a million people on Sunday at 2pm” is the message of one of the users.

Background

The Gendarmerie announced in a statement on Thursday that the protest by supporters of the pro-Russian candidate with a legionary speech, Călin Georgescu, at the Constitutional Court will continue, even though it is illegal:

  • „It did not follow the procedure stipulated by the law on public assemblies””It did not follow the procedure stipulated by Law No. 60/1991 (republished) on the organization and holding of public assemblies, with subsequent amendments and additions, for the prior declaration of the public assembly, so that its holding will be outside the current legal framework” the Romanian Gendarmerie said.

A protest was organized on Friday, when Călin Georgescu, the pro-Russian candidate in the November 24 presidential elections, was to file a petition. Georgescu called his supporters in front of the CCR in a Facebook post on Thursday, also as he left the country.

  • „Starting today, I will personally take this defense of our democratic rights to the European international institutions. Me there, you here”:

The gendarmes have made several recommendations for the protest participants, including attending the demonstration without bags or bulky luggage, without weapons and not to incite hatred or violence. The Gendarmerie also told organizers to refrain from violent actions and to immediately indicate their demonstration area to the police so that they can intervene.

The gendarmes also announced that they would be photographing and filming the entire event to discourage participants from resorting to violence and to prove possible anti-social acts.

On December 6, the Constitutional Court annulled the first round of the November 24 presidential elections and ordered the elections to start from scratch. Călin Georgescu, who was to enter the second round from first place, together with Elena Lasconi (USR), challenged the decision before the Bucharest Court of Appeal, which rejected the application, mainly on the grounds that the decisions of the Court of Appeal are binding and final.

Georgescu subsequently appealed to the High Court of Cassation and Justice and lodged an action at the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR).
