The National Institute for the Study of the Holocaust in Romania „Elie Wiesel” and the Freedom House Romania Foundation organize on Saturday, at the Museum of National History and Archaeology in Constanta, from 11:00 AM, „Images from the past. The Holocaust in Romania”, a comic book exhibition that presents the experiences of Constanța’s Jews and Roma people during the Holocaust in Romania, according to a press release.
The project speaks about the 1,700 Jews of Constanța, persecuted during the Legionary National State and later incarcerated in the Cobadin camp and then moved to the villages of Osmancea, Mereni and Ciobănița, from where they returned only to find their homes destroyed and looted and to be further persecuted until August of 1944.
The exhibition also addresses the subject of the Roma people of Constanta, deported to Transnistria, „where they had to face disease, hunger and cold. Just because they were Roma,” the press release also states.
The exhibition „Images from the Past. Holocaust in Romania” is part of the educational-cultural project „Visualising The Past Through Graphic Novels. Prompting Local Involvement For Holocaust Remembrance In Romania”, funded by the European Union and implemented by the „Elie Wiesel” Institute in ten counties in the country, with the support of Freedom House and local communities.
The organizers point out that students from several high schools in Constanta, including the „George Călinescu” High School, the „Ovidius” High School and the „Alexandru Ioan Cuza” National Military College contributed to the exhibition.
